7 reasons AI won’t wipe out humanity…

We’ve all watched Hollywood movies in which AI take control of themselves and wipe out the entire human race, and we’ve all worried about it since then.  And these movies certainly do an excellent job in painting absurd and unrealistic. After all, it’s fiction.

Some, like Elon Musk, have spent billions to prevent AI growth.  But are they really a threat to humanity? Will they rise and revolt as in i, Robot or ex-machina?

No, they won’t, and here are 7 reasons why…..

1. We program them!

I know what you’re thinking that they’ll learn to program themselves. That’s highly improbable. It might seem possible to you, but anyone who actually writes AI would know deny it. AI is designed to be alterable, and we can do so whenever we want to. AI is designed according to our needs and specifications. Consider this- If God (please don’t get me wrong, God doesn’t really exist) showed up in front of humans tomorrow, would we kill him or worship him. It is true that humans and AI have very different psychology, but we are the ones designing the way they think.

We can always create them such that we can always terminate them, even though there’s little to support that we might actually need to do that.

2. It’s not growing that fast.

Despite what you’ve probably heard, AI is not improving that fast. There might be a growth in terms of input in the field but not the output. Even though the use of AI is increasing its quality isn’t. It’s still a long time to even think of AI thinking in a way likewise to humans. (again, it’s improbable we’ll make them think like us).

3. The job problem isn’t a problem.

Many argue that AI is taking up jobs previously done by humans. Even though usage of AI has increased since 2000, the employment rate has been consistent. What this means is that AI is not really affecting employment. Did cars affect employment of horse-riders? No, because they needed drivers for the cars. You might argue that self-driving cars are coming up. But who do you think are making those cars? Similarly, AI won’t reduce human employment. Only that humans will be employed in a higher category of jobs.

There were similar debates during industrialization, that industrialization would take away jobs. But they didn’t. Employment might be affected for a short interval, but it eventually increased.

4. Why would they do it?

Let’s disregard whatever I just said. Suppose AI has the opportunity and capability to take over the world. But why would it? Just because its intelligent doesn’t necessarily mean that they’ll kill all humans. That’s all Hollywood and only Hollywood.

They don’t really have any incentive to do so. As I said before, would you kill God even if She/He were weaker than you??

5. Boxing.

A human creating AI has the ability to box it, that is, limit its capabilities. He/She can limit the resources that an AI has access to or the actions that it can take. The extreme level of AI boxing is ‘pulling off the plug’, which would make it useless. This would, however, limit its capabilities.

6. We’ll be living together.

Instead of a future in which AI becomes a dominant force on planet Earth, there could be an integrated future for humans and AI. This will bring out maximum productivity. AI could work in fields such as customer service or photo-identification.

So even if AI really does go to that extent, there isn’t anything to fear about.

7. It’s more of a hype.

We are talking about two advanced intelligence that might come to conflict and destroy each other. It’s just a hype. We are not even close. True, the day will come when AI is at that level, but its a long way. And when it comes, we won’t have anything to fear.

And even if a conflict arises(which is extremely unlikely), we would be advanced enough to handle it.

Conclusion.

Instead of fearing AI, we should embrace it. It is a great opportunity and offers a bright future, so it’s useless to worry about. Its all the fault of those movies that you’re even reading this, and its pure fiction. AI is something that will enhance humans than kill them(them?! More like ‘us’).

Now I know you’re might disagree with me or find faults in a few of my lines. You might even have some questions or suggestions. Let me know in the comments section below and I’ll respond.
